Driven drum brakes

Hello all.
Currently I had some work on recycled wheelchair hubs.
I want to build one side mounted, driven rear hubs with drum brakes.
Normally these hubs are spinning around a fixed 12mm axle.
After removing the axle and hammering out the bearings, i put the hubs on the turning lathe, widening the center hole of the drum hubs to nearly 25mm.
Then I pressed the new 25x2 cromo steel axle into the hub.
Additionally, i welded a flange to the outer end of the axle tube, screwed to the hub to make sure a proper torque transmission.
Left: Front hub with usual 12mm axle
Right: same hub after being  converted into a driven rear hub
with 25mm axle and outer torque flange.

  1. Nice cycle. I started building a quadricycle about 10 year's ago, but it started to get too heavy as it's rather hilly here, so I cut it up to make a rowing boat trailer... I'm now back thinking of doing it again, but with electric assist this time. Here, in the UK, every wheel must have brakes, the easiest system is to just use cycle wheels with disc brakes on, but they need to be supported both sides, so your wheel chair option may look nicer and offer a good solution to that. I am looking for plans at the moment, mainly for the steering.. I'm thinking a 3 wheeler this time. Can you recommend any good sites to view? Thanks.

  2. Of course there are also one side mounted, driven rear wheels with disc brakes available.
Look at Samagaga dot com for example.
Or, build your own using wheels with 20mm bolt through axle.
I made freewheel adaptors which are screwed onto the disc mount of those wheels. So you can have both disc brakes and freewheel, in this case on the same side 2cm apart. A chain housing might be mandatory to prevent a greased disc in this case.
